Asbestos in Glasgow homes
As everywhere in the UK, a great many homes in and around Glasgow were built or refurbished before 2000, while asbestos could still be used in building materials. That's true whether you live in a tenement flat, a terraced house, a semi or a bungalow.
The places it most often turns up are the same across the country:
- Artex and textured ceilings
- Old floor tiles, and the black adhesive under them
- Garage and shed roofs
- Cement sheets, soffits and panels
- Insulation board

Before you start work
If you're planning to renovate, rewire, fit a new kitchen or bathroom, or take down a ceiling, test first. A written result helps your builder, plasterer or electrician plan the job, and it means nobody disturbs asbestos by mistake.
If you rent your home, speak to your landlord or letting agent before drilling or decorating.
Flats, tenements and the shared close
HSE says the duty to manage asbestos applies to the shared parts of some domestic buildings. If you live in a tenement or a block of flats, ask your factor what's known about the common close before any work there. Inside your own flat, the same advice applies as anywhere: test before you drill, sand or lift. If you rent, our guide to renting and asbestos covers who does what.
Some things you should never sample
Never sample pipe lagging or sprayed coatings or loose-fill insulation. Those need a licensed asbestos professional. Insulation board is different. Don't sample it yourself. Send us a photo first and we'll advise. If you're unsure, don't touch it. Send us a photo and ask.
