This is advice about what to test, not an asbestos survey. Nobody can tell whether something contains asbestos from a photo. Only the lab can tell you for sure.

A photo can't tell you if something is asbestos, and we'll never pretend it can. Only a lab test can.
Every sample will be analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory, named on every certificate.
Your kit gives you the FFP3 mask, coverall, gloves, spray and double bags. Add a flat screwdriver from home. Mist it first, take a small piece, bag and label it, seal the spot, damp-wipe after: steps based on HSE guidance.

The photo check points at what's worth testing, works out how many samples you need, and shows you how to take each one. It never says “this is asbestos”. It says: “This kind of material often contained asbestos in homes of this age: test it.”
If a photo isn't clear enough, it asks for another rather than guess.

Your kit comes with everything: a proper mask, gloves, sample bags, a spray bottle and a return envelope. Take a small sample, seal it, and post it back to the lab.
Before you seal it, scan the bag's QR code and take a photo. PhotoProof pins your photo to that bag's number, so you, the lab and anyone you show can see exactly which material each result is for. Then follow every sample on its own live tracker.
A photo proves which material and which bag. Only the lab can say what's in it.

The laboratory analyses your sample under the microscope. Your result and certificate come to you by email: something you can show a builder, a buyer or a landlord.
With it comes a plain-English page for every sample: what the lab found, what it means and what to do next, and a real person to talk it through. Anyone you show can scan the certificate's QR code to check it's genuine.
Chrysotile, a type of asbestos, was found in this ceiling coating.

From our own research into common complaints about home test kits, October 2026.

Asbestos fibres are far thinner than a human hair. No photo, app or trained eye can confirm them. Only a microscope in an accredited laboratory can.
In UK homes built or refurbished before 2000, these are the most common places to find it. Tap the one that looks like yours.

Swirls, stipples and patterns on ceilings and walls.

Old 9-inch tiles and the black glue underneath.

Grey corrugated sheets, gutters and downpipes.

Flat sheets on sheds, soffits, panels and partitions.
Want to read up first? Our guides cover Artex, floor tiles, garage roofs, cement sheets, what asbestos looks like, and how to take a sample in about 10 minutes.

The laboratory will be named on every certificate, so you always know exactly who tested your sample.
Every certificate will name the laboratory and its UKAS accreditation number.

No. Only a lab test can tell you for sure. Your photo helps us work out which kit you need and how many samples, so you don't buy the wrong thing.
Ours is £44.99 with one lab sample, and each extra sample is £12. Kits are launching soon, and it's free to book now with just your email. Across the UK, a home kit with protective kit and one lab sample usually costs about £30 to £55: see what asbestos testing costs.
One lab sample, analysed; an FFP3 disposable respirator; a disposable coverall; gloves and double sample bags; a spray bottle; a step-by-step guide; and a return envelope. From home, add a flat screwdriver, a plastic sheet or bin bag, a roll of tape and a damp cloth. More on the test kit.
One for each different material, colour or area. If the kitchen and the hall ceilings were done in different years or patterns, that's two. A floor tile and its black adhesive may be two more. Our photo check will suggest a number.
Yes, for the materials home kits are made for: Artex and textured coatings, floor tiles and their adhesive, and cement sheets. Worth testing: your kit has the safety gear and the bags, an FFP3 mask, a coverall, gloves, a spray bottle and double sample bags, with a step-by-step guide based on HSE guidance. Mist it first, take a small piece with a flat screwdriver, bag and label it, seal the spot and damp-wipe after. It takes about 10 minutes. For a garage or shed roof, take it from an edge you can reach standing on the ground.
When kits launch, a UKAS-accredited laboratory, named on every certificate, so you always know exactly who tested your sample. It will look at your sample under a polarised light microscope, the standard way to identify asbestos in a material, and your result will come to you by email, in writing. Only the lab can tell you for sure.
Anywhere in the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The photo check is free and open now, before you buy anything: our research didn't find a free photo check at any of the 23 UK sellers we checked (22–23 Oct 2026). And the lab will be named on every certificate. We sell kits too, so compare UK kits side by side.
It's checked automatically: your photo is sent to Google's Gemini AI, which looks at it for us, not a person. We don't keep it unless you send it to us with your details. Then we use it only to reply to you, never sell it, and delete it after 90 days.
