Who we are
Is It Asbestos? runs the website isitasbestos.co.uk. We decide how the details you send us are used, and we look after them. You can reach us at hello@isitasbestos.co.uk.
The AI photo check
When you press "Check my photo", your photo and the room you picked are sent to Google's Gemini AI, which looks at the photo for us and sends back codes for the building materials it can see. Our own rules turn those codes into the advice you see. The AI never decides what a material is: only a lab can.
- We don't keep your photo from the photo check. It's only kept if you choose to send it to us with your details (see below).
- Location data is removed. Before the photo leaves your phone or computer, the page redraws it at a smaller size. That leaves out the hidden details phones store in photos, such as the GPS location.
- Google: Google's terms for paid use of the Gemini API say it doesn't use what we send it to improve its products, and that it keeps it only for a limited time, to detect misuse and for legal reasons (Gemini API terms).
- What we keep for each check is a record of what was found and the advice given (material codes, timings and cost), never the photo. To stop misuse, we count how many checks come from each internet connection for 15 minutes, using a scrambled code rather than the address itself.
What we collect
Only what you choose to send us when you send us your details:
- your photo, if you add one (it's made smaller in your browser before it's sent)
- your answers and the photo check's result: what we noticed, how many samples, and the kit we suggested
- your name and email address
- your phone number and your town or postcode, if you choose to give them
- the address of the page you sent it from
Like any website, the service that hosts this site may briefly process technical details, such as your IP address, to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse.
Why we use it
Only to reply to you about the right kit: which kit you need, how many samples, or whether you need a professional instead. You give us your consent with the tick box when you send your details, and you can take it back at any time by emailing us.
We won't use your details for marketing, and we never use your photo for anything else.
How long we keep it
- Photos are deleted after 90 days.
- Your enquiry details are kept for up to 12 months, then deleted, unless you become a customer.
- If you become a customer, we keep the details we need for your order, and for our accounts as the law requires.
Who sees it
We never sell your details or your photo, and we never share them with anyone for their own use. They're stored securely by the companies that run this website and our email for us, who may only use them on our instructions. The AI photo check uses Google's Gemini AI on the same basis.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- show you the details we hold about you
- correct anything that's wrong
- delete your details and your photo

Cookies
We don't use cookies to track you or for advertising. The fonts on this site are served from this site itself, so loading them doesn't connect you to anyone else.

If we change this notice, we'll update it here and change the date at the top.
